As a Texas company, do I need to collect sales tax on software license fees I charge to clients in Texas? I f my company is in Texas and we sell online inventory management software to businesses via an online monthly subscription/license fee, would should my company collect sales tax from our clients in Texas, or in any other state? We do not ship a product as it is 100% online, our clients simply have access to our online software service which we customize for each client's business. Thank you My software is somewhat custom for every client which I think means that it would not be applicable to sales tax. It is very difficult to get a clear definition on what is taxable and what is not whhen it comes to custom software licensing

Best contact management software? I started with ACT! Version 6. Have upgraded to the new versions and then back to 6 a the new versions are slow and have loads of problems. I also use Outlook for e mail client. Act 6 e- mail is not that good. I am wondering if there is another contact management program. My dream would be to have all the contact management functions of Act! speed, and a great e mail system. The one thing I really have always wanted and have not found is a way to turn all records in Act or a contact manager into a time sheet. Much of my activity is e mail based and would like to be able to assign these activities billing codes and send to quickbooks. Even if this is too much to ask would like to just find a great reliable contact manager! Thanks!

Recommendations for project management software? I'm looking for an easy-to-use project management tool, web based, less than $100/month, for up to 15 users. The main functionality I need is to have a visual representation of projects going on in our business - preferably being able to categorize projects to see everything going on for each type of project we work on. Or by each type of business unit, or each type of client, etc. I don't want to be bogged down entering details. I need a program where I can enter the basics and get an at-a-glace view of what's going on at any given time. Any ideas? Recommendations?

Can installing ASP.NET 2.0 screw up existing software on a server? I am going in to upload a website to a Windows server that may not have ASP.NET 2.0 on it. The server currently holds a website and a proprietary software package that handles client management for a debt-collection firm. If I have to install ASP.NET 2.0 to get the new website working, could it interfere with existing software? Does the server keep the old framework as well, or is ASP.NET 2.0 backward compatible with the previous? If I didn't phrase everything correctly, bear with me. I am pretty new at the server stuff and was thrust into this by my boss - just trying to get this project done and minimize collateral damage :)
What is a good GUI client for MySQL? I need a good GUI client for the MySQL database management system. I'm new to MySQL and don't know what should I use since there are many options. I would prefer free software. In your opinion, which GUI client should I use?
How is a static software product classified as a business asset? Company owns & markets an old software product. Was the first of its kind, fully home grown, no long term future. But will still sell decently for probably 3-5 years. Proprietary nature precludes re engineering, so is architecturally static. No true R&D possible, though can be improved in marginal ways, which clients like. So, exactly how would this product be classified as a business asset, from the perspective of management/accounting?

what changes can i make to make my application to a web enabled or a smart client? assuming i have this scenerio. ABC is an establish insurance company. its operation is supported by an in–house insurance application (AgentMaid), which runs on the company’s local area network. AgentMaid is a two-tiered client/server application; its fat client software has a very user friendly interface with rich functionality. The IT department’s main responsibility is to maintain and support AgentMaid. This application has to be changed frequently in response to the rapid change of business need (such as policy and rate changes). Due to the two-tiered architecture, the code of fat clients is often changed; as a result, agents are required to upgrade their client software on their computers frequently. Agents are not IT savvy, so they are not always on top of this task, namely, upgrading their client software version. One of agents recently had a major problem running an older version of the client software; as a result, the potential customer could not get the proposal on time and turn to the competitor. More and more similar incidents occurred due to frequent change of client versions. Fat clients also cause a lot of network bandwidth problems, due to some poor design of application logics. Management decided to revamp the application, enabling agents to access AgentMaid using web browsers. As part of the IT department, your team is asked to look into current client-server architecture, and propose necessary architecture changes to make this application web enabled. The main requirement is to propose a solution which allows frequent change of business logics, without much impact on end users. In addition, your proposed changes should also cover non-functional requirements such as availability, performance, and extensibility.

Vista Business - can it really be this slow? We waited with baited breath for Vista to be installed at work - would speed up our clogged up system etc - now it seems worse than ever. Can it really be this slow? I am not imagining it - I time how long I wait for that damn blue circle to go round before the email I clicked on actually OPENS .... on average 15 SECONDS. Now in our business we're talking scheduling international meetings, emailing multiple zip documents, heavy word processing, running the accounts software, the doc management software, the client tracking software, the webmail, the proxy access for 5 or so colleagues, the .ppt presentations and the spreadsheets. And we're all getting seriously fed up with this long-awaited Vista Schmista. Are you in a fast moving business and suffering like us?

Stores client information of bookings and calculates amount payed (e.g. if customer stays 5 days in a double room say ..). Also each employee has its own individual file consisting of personal details. From this you have a table with "hours worked" where you add the number of hours worked to each customer and then with a formula you get net pay. so i guess the entities would be ... "employees" and "bookings" ? maybe? i need to make them one to many and i need a 3rd table to link them dont i ..?
strict uniformity of hardware and software? In what situations and/or types of companies should the strict uniformity of hardware and software for ALL client machines be strictly enforced? In which situations is it less important, or not at all important? Discuss this in terms of: • Type of company • Size of company (At a minimum, compare a small company of 5-15 professionals to a large company with many different levels and competencies.) • Staff functions • From IT vs. user vs. management points of view.

I have three questions... ?.... I have three questions, please answer them with explanation. Q-1) You are a network administrator for Uk. The network consists of a single Active Directory domain named Uk.com. Your company acquires a company named Usa. The USA network consists of a single Active-Directory domain named USA.com. A server named Server32 is a network-management application server in the USA.com domain. Server32 accesses all of the desktop client computers to perform automated software upgrades and hardware inventory. The network-management software on Server32 references desktop computers by unqualified host names, which are resolved to client name.USA.com by using a DNS server. You join Server32 to your domain to become server32.Uk.com. The Server32 IP address is 10.10.10.90. You are gradually migrating all USA.com desktop client computers to your domain to become clientname.Uk.com. You do not have access to the USA.com DNS server. When Server32 attempts to apply an update to the client computers, the network-management software returns many alerts that say that desktop client computers cannot be found. You want to allow the network-management software on Server32 to resolve unqualified client computer host names in USA.com or Uk.com, and you want to use minimum amount of administrative effort. What should you do? A.) On the DNS Server for Uk.com, add a zone for USA.com. Create a host ( A) record for server32.USA.com that points to 10.10.10.90. B.) On Server32 in System Properties, type USA.com in the Primary DNS suffix of this computer field in the DNS suffix and NetBIOS Computer. C.) On Server32, configure a Hosts file that contains the name and IP address of every notebook computer. D.) On Server32, in Advanced TCP/IP Settings, add USA.com and Uk.com to the Append these DNS suffixes (in order) setting. Q-2) You are the network administrator for your company. The network consists of a single Active Directory domain name abc.com. The domain Dns Servers are configured as shown in the following table. Server Name - IP Addresses - Server Operating System - Server Role - Server1 - 10.10.1.222 - Windows Server 2003 - Domain Controller Server2 - 10.10.1.126 - Windows 2000 Server - Member Server Server3 - 10.10.1.241 - Windows Server 2003 - Dpmain Controller Server4 - 10.10.1.192 - UNIX - Not applicable Server5 - 10.10.1.245 - Windows Server 2003 - Domain Controller DNS Role Server1- Standard Primary Server2 - Standard Secondary Server3 - Standard Secondary Server4 - Standard Secondary Server5 - Standard Secondary You uninstall Dns from Server2 and reconfigure Server2 as a file server. Then you reconfigure Server4 as a caching-only server. Next, you reconfigure the domain controllers to use Active Directory-Integrated DNS zones. You need to eliminate unnecessary zone transfer activity on the network. There are Server2, Server3, Server4 & Server5 IP addresses in the notify box which is on the Zone transfer tab. What should you change in the notify dialog box, Write the IP address or addresses which should be included. Answer) Write the answer here with the explanation... Q-3) You are the network administrator for Web hosting company. All servers run Windows Server 2003. All client computers run Windows Xp Professional. Your company is assigned the following IP Address ranges by ISP. 131.107.10.0 through 131.107.10.255 131.107.11.0 through 131.107.11.255 The company’s data center contains 400 Windows Server 2003 computers and consists of two subnets named Subnet A and Subnet B. Subnet A contains 200 Servers and uses the 131.107.10.0 network address. Subnet B also contains 200 Servers and uses the 131.107.11.0 network address. All server IP addresses are assigned by DHCP. All computers in the data center have valid Internet-accessible IP addresses. As a result of a corporate acquisition, 200 additional servers will be added to your company’s data center within one month. The new servers will be placed on the network segment that maps to subnet A. The existing router does not have the capacity for additional subnet, and the budget does not allow the purchase of a new router. You will need to add the additional servers to the existing subnet A. The ISP assigns you the additional IP Address range 131.107.12.0 through 131.107.12.255. You need to change the IP addressing scheme to accommodate all required servers in Subnet A and Subnet B. You are authorized to make any necessary changes. Which IP Addresses should be assigned to each subnet? To answer, select the appropriate IP address or addresses …. 1.) 131.107.10.0 / 23. 2.) 131.107.11.0 / 23. 3.) 131.107.12.0 / 23. 4.) 131.107.10.0 / 24. 5.) 131.107.11.0 / 24. 6.) 131.107.12.0 / 24. 400 Computers - Subnet A ...IP Address .... ? 200 Computers - Subnet B ...IP Address .... ?
Where can I find Intrnet based programmers? I would like to offer clients online (web based) software, such as time-keeping, project management, inventory control..etc. How do I purchase such a software to be able to use it for profir? Or any ideas/leads on companies that develop such software for a reasonable price?
what is the best software to help with inventory management for a business? my buddy owns a smokeshop. He is looking for software to help keep track of his inventory, the simpler and more easy to use the software is the better because hes not very computer saavy. He's looking for software that can take care of most inventory solutions. He is not dealing with client profiles or shipping, just straight vending of cigarrettes. Any help on this would be appreciated. Price is not an obstacle. Thanks for your response, but we are looking for a computer program mainly. he has a desktop at work and wants to use it to manage the cigarette carton types he sells.

language for small software? I am writing a software for the small hair salon that does some basic daily operations: client tracking, appointment setting, management report, and so on. Which languages (.NET, C++, Java) do you think is suitable for my needs? How do I store the client info? do I need to integrate with database like access? Note: this software will be running on XP Thanks
Was this a problem during Collins submarine software delivery ? A/Such a simple thing, but it's far more complex than it appears on the surface. Having spent many years in the code mines I have a first hand view of the nightmare that software devleopment has become. Key issues. They biggest problem is management. Frequently people manage software projects that are utterly clueless about the technology. They will order nonsensical things like allowing users to modify the primary key, Time spent in meetings. Once the specs are hammered out many developers are good to go. Programming is almost an art form and when you are in the groove the last thing you want to do is step away from it, go sit down at some waste of time meeting which often has nothing to do with the project or if it does is just rehashing what you are doing. If you get ANYTHING productive out of a meeting it's something that could have been done in a non-real time fashion such as a forum, in email or offlines on IM. The old adage of tape the specs to the top of the pizza box and slide it under the door really is true for the majority of programmers. The less they are disturbed the better they work. Often programmers find their most productive time outside office hours. So pointy haired bossed unable to evaluate employees in any other way than seeing their smiling face promptly at 8am really don't understand programming. It is not raw hours but productive hours. Coders are like other creative endeavors. Some days they are in a hot groove and that groove follows no schedule, respects no authority and is quite fragile. Bother a programmer to death and you wipe out their ability to code that day. Not just meetings but saddling them with jr coders, PR jobs, useless documentation completely unrelated to the project or that isn't necessary to the code completion. Programmers are often trapped in pits of red tape. The DB refusing crucial changes just to demonstrate it is THEIR DB not the developers. The inability to get the hardware for testing software or to build test DBs since all too often the DBA is too "busy: to set up a test environment. Worthless specs is a frequent problem in software development. Some people should not ever even think about glancing at specs much less writing them. Far too often people who write specs are not programmers and have no clue about technology. They will spec out the impossible and miss easy to add features. The ignorance of those writing specs can be astounding sometimes. It is often clear that the spec writer never once talked to the client or more often they talked to the manager who has never done the job that the software is being designed to be used by. Far too often I will write code true to specs then when the client sees it they freak. Then after meeting with the end client I discover I wasted almost every minute of the time I spent writing that code as it was spec'd so poorly. Frequently when you move from a legacy system you just export the bugs from one software system to another since those bugs are logic flaws caused by poor specs and or system design and very tight requirements were followed. If you ask for something and get it, then why complain? I had to leave the code mines before I strangled a pointy haired boss. I loved coding, loved the design and specs but the stupidity of the administration I had to deal with company after company the total lack of technical understanding by CIOs, project managers and the politics that were all too often embedded into projects drove me nuts. I actually had somebody tell me they could not give me crucial data because their boss didn;'t like my boss. I've lived far too many Dilbert moments and could take it no more. Q was/Is software development a manyheaded monster ? Incidents from earlier legacy systems keep reappearing.?
What is good cleaning business management software? I have been searching for a long time for a software, under $100, that can help me manage my clients, pricing, scheduling, billing, appointments, etc. Just basic stuff to organize I am a small (micro), homebased business that cleans yards and rental properties. Im not looking for quick books.
Is this why Collins submarine software was supposedly difficult to integrate ? <<This is life in the code mines, and it should explain why your lucky to get decent documenation much less any form or record keeping. Wake up and trudge off to the code mines. If it's early in the release cycle you probably had sleep unless you spent all night playing video games or trying to make one of your own private coding projects work. Get in and attend a meeting or two or three. Sometimes entire days are wasted in meetings, usually meetings that have zero impact on what you are doing or even worse will produce conflicts in what exactly is desired thus putting your code on halt. If you actually get to your desk, then there are a host of emails, most minutia about insurance changes, office supplies, a few joke emails, stupid rules changes. Finally you get to see the important emails. If your early in the cylce they are mostly spec changes and additions. Mid cycle they are massive changes usually, code exchanged with other programmers, requests going back and forth to the DBA(s)/project managers/end client and such. Often you waste an hour or more a day stuck inbetween the project manager, end client rep and upper management wrangling over whether to add a feature or not. In more than on instance I've been able to just write a feature in ignoring the time wasting debate about whether it was cost effective or not to add it in far less time than it'd taken to answer the flurry of emails about it. Late in the dev cycle if it's not a cricital bug you ignore pretty much all emails, memos and sometimes even critical hygene. Then when you get to code, if your lucky your writing from scratch. Problem is all these project managers with time on thier hands, no technical knowledge whatsoever have 20 different systems and coding standards they want you to adhere too. Experienced programmers ignore them as they know thier Project manager wouldn't know if you did or didn't do it their way and almost all are a complete waste of time with no value added to the project at all. Still you have to listen, nod your head like you care and pretend to impliment it. All time eating devices. If your unlucky your trying to figure out somebody elses code. Documentation is never up to date if it exists at all. Some coders use vars with no rational naming convention, others use 20 char var names that are impossible to type acurately so you have to waste time cutting and pasting and developing means to cope with thier overly verbose and just as meaningless naming conventions. Anything over 12 is probably as confusing as a 3 char var name. Typos are inevitable if you don't cut and paste and cutting and pasting slows you down tremendously. So you write your code knowing that at the last minute people are going to admit they lied to you about what they wanted. They will want features added, will want things changed even though you did it exactly how they said they wanted it done. There will be things that nobody thought of until you reach that point. If you use M$ products there will be bugs not in your code you have to work around. There will be other issues to solve. All of which while dodging Pointy haired bosses who's main function seem to be in slowing your work down and making it harder. In all cases you are asked to do work that should take four times as long as your expected to do it in. This is aggravated by all the time wasting meetings, emails, memos and boss talk. Then you have to deal with your own bugs, logic errors and conflicts in development and production environments. So your code changes dramatically toward the end with a huge portion of it written scrambling at the last minute in a sleep deprived haze. Documentation is omitted or not changed to match what has changed. You start focusing primarily on essential elements, skip minor bugs that you can pretend you didn't know about until testers find them to concentrate on major bugs and feature creep. Then comes the release which always finds a slew of bugs nobody knew about and you start into the bug fix cycle which is usually really heavy for big bugs then slows down but instead of being able to concentrate on cleaning up your code your given new software to write and expected to magically generate time to fix old bugs inbetween time wasting meetings, memos and other office stupidity. Even finding basic supplies becomes an adventure many times as things you desperately need are always in short supply but what you don't need in large supply. So what you suggest is just yet another layer of red tape that means less coding time. Less time spent working on the actual software and bug fixes. It will not be well recieved by coders nor will it suceed unless you provide an environment where coders spend more time coding than doing documentation and company tasks.>> To Jack, To Two 11|| To Serenity Thanks.

GPO + Software install: Doesn't work. Need help for my network technologies class? No one in class can get the software install to automatically load on the client pc. I'll try to sum it up the best I can. Have a class that we are working with Windows Server 2003. Have a Domain setup on our host pc. Have a second pc that is a client and can logon the domain. It can access the public folder that we setup. (We also put the test program Windows Defender MSI in there). We installed GPMC and are using Group Policy Manager (we also tried a similiar method in AD Users and Comps). So, we name our policy Push1 and we mapped it as \\server\folder\file.msi as per Microsoft's instructions (not browse). We double checked the members of/rights area and the clientxp (our test login name) has that. Both under the computer management and user management we tried setting up these GPO Software installs. Weird thing is that if we restart the server, it auto installs on there. I double checked and it shows it as comp/user management for our domain not the local pc Any ideas? Can add info
How much should I charge to train my former company's employees on the application I built? I built a custom content management application for my last company to manage their website and help file. I trained my replacement before I left, but he turned out to be worthless, and left. Now no one at the company knows how the thing works, and then want me to come train them as an independent contractor. I'm willing to do it, and could use the extra cash, but I'm not sure how much to charge. Any ideas? I was thinking that I should charge at least $125/hour, plus the travel expenses. That was the rate that my former employer charged their clients for training on our software. And after all, I have no competition, right? Does this seem high? low? Anyone have any experience with this kind of situation? 1. I liked working there, but I got hired by Yahoo, which is of course much better. 2. It'll probably be 6-8 hours of training, plus 4 hours of setup, so 10-12 hours of work total. They'll pay for any followups separately, but I don't expect any. 3. Travel expenses will be $0.35/mile (they're in San Diego, I'm in LA), and a standard rate for food and lodging. (If they select 8 hours of training, it'll be over 2 days, so one night at a hotel.)
